Is acrylic Recyclable?
Yes, you can recycle acrylic.
PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate), commonly known as acrylic or Perspex, is recyclable. However, the recycling process for acrylic is more challenging compared to many other plastics.
This is because the chemical structure of acrylic involves complex polymer chains, and breaking down these chains for recycling requires a more complex process than mechanical recycling.
One common method for recycling PMMA involves depolymerization or cracking the polymer chains into monomer units. This process breaks down the long polymer chains of PMMA into its constituent monomers, typically methyl methacrylate. These monomers can then be purified and used to produce new PMMA without the need for significant changes in its chemical structure.
Do Aylesbury Granulation Recycle acrylic?
Aylesbury Granulation do not recycle acrylic ourselves, but we act as a hub for good quality acrylic.
We can accept clear sheet grade acrylic only with a 1 tonne minimum. Materials must be free of LD laminates; securely and safely packaged; and, well covered. As we are a hub for this material we can only accept materials in at certain times of the year. There are no rebates for acrylic, but you can rest assured that your waste plastic will be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly fashion, and thus ensure that it is not destined for landfill or incineration.
